How To Self Diagnose

How do you know you are having transmission problems?

Remco Transmissions Inc.

  • There are a number of signs that can tell you if your automatic transmission is having a problem. Remco Transmissions, Inc. advises you to pay attention to the following:
  • If your check engine light goes on it may be indicative of any number of problems . However, in newer model cars the computer system is very sensitive to transmission irregularities and you must consider this as a possibility. Your mechanic can scan your vehicle to pinpoint your problem.
  • If you find that your vehicle is leaking red automatic transmission fluid, it could be a sign that your transmission is in the early stages of having problems. If the fluid has a dark burnt look and smell you certainly should have a transmission specialist examine your vehicle. Leaking transmission oil may not necessary lead to catastrophic failure, sometimes a leak can be repaired without the need of replacing the unit.
  • Loss of reverse, or forward or both! If your engine is running but your car won’t move it’s is a strong indication that your transmission is failing.
  • Even if you are not mechanically knowledgeable you will know when your car is not shifting properly. Normally you may be unaware that your car is shifting, but when you find yourself driving along and you try to accelerate and the car hesitates or you hear the car whining or making other sounds like it’s struggling to get going this is another signal that your transmission is not working up to par.
